Babs at her best with full orchestra singing romantic songs with her now mature voice. Love it, especially the song “Where Do You Begin” about picking up the pieces after you’ve loved and lost. If you’re at all a romantic, like myself, you’ll love this CD.

Ms. Streisand’s work has so been such an infrequent disappointment, disappointment is overall a miniscule word to define this once in a lifetime artist. Her work, in jazz (“Cry Me A River”, for example) was the type of jazz I had hoped this recording would exude. However, this particular CD is more along the lines of jazz you hear at an relaxing fine dining restaurant with a mellow jazz band as background music vs a jazz club.
While it is not my style of jazz (I found every song sounded too similar to each other with the exception of “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”), it is exactly right on for the venue and audience she performed it live for. This CD’s lyrics also suit the title and would, in essence, make quite nice background music for a dinner party. To me, Ms. Streisand’s exceptional voice and ability to work with orchestrations and make them stand out, places her talent beyond ‘background’ music. As a result, I found this CD disappointing and simultaneously worth one (unfortunately, painful) listen to.
It was probably a wonderful collection of songs for her live performance at the Village Vanguard and does what it says but, just under ok unless you really enjoy extremely slow, repetative jazz for the lyrics and informal listening to this remarkable talent.

we have grown up listening to miss streisand from the start. we own many of her albums and have always thought that she was the greatest singer of all time.but things change and sometimes not for the best. we were so very disappointed in her latest album and thought that it was not her best showing. maybe age has something to do with the process, but it was one of her worst yet. we don’t even listen to it multiple times like the older, better ones. sorry barbara but maybe if you get off that pedestal…….

CD arrived in stated (like new) condition, and promptly. She doesn’t hit the same high notes as she did 40 years ago, but the voice, as well as the delivery, are still right there. Barbara does not lose it.

I wanted this CD since it came out this past year. However, until I found a reasonably priced copy on Amazon I avoided purchasing it. The concept of having the Deluxe Edition which contains 2 CD’s one with a full orchestra and one with the same songs with a Quartet lets you choose which version you are in the mood hear. The fact that Diana Krall had a lot to do in producing this album is very good since I am a fan of Diana’s. As with all albums the songs chosen some good and some just OK depending on a person’s choice is to be expected. Overall, it is a great album by a great artist.

What’s it all about…Barbra! – Stephen Sanders –
I love Barbra Streisand so I always keep my eyes and ears open to see what she will do next. I realize now that she is almost retired and really has a great life with her husband, her dog, and her roses that she is not going to want to work too hard anymore. I am very happy for her but sad for our loss. Last year when I heard she was coming out with a jazzy type album with Diana Krall, I thought great…Bossa Nova Barbra! What we got was a nice, beautiful album with nice, beautiful ballads. No songs got passed neutral. Too safe for me! There are thousands of songs that could have been much more appropriate for Barbra Streisand. Lately, I have been listening to the new, Shirley Bassey…”The Performance” and I found myself thinking these are the songs (or at least the emotions) I wish Barbra Streisand had given me with her album. Well, Shirley is a few years older than Barbra so perhaps there is time for more and DIFFERENT types of Streisand albums. Also, let’s get Ms. Streisand back in the movies. She is too good of an actress to leave at home…but of course, she is staying home because she wants to. Here’s to Life, Barbra Streisand, Barbra Streisand!

I bought the deluxe edition based on the reviews on here and I am so glad I did. Sometimes I am in the mood for full swelling orchestra and Barbra’s gorgeous voice with it. Other times,I prefer the softer, much more intimate jazz-infused songs. Either way, Barbra continues to show that she is the #1 female vocalist (if not the #1 vocalist) of all times. Her voice is rich and mature, and the song collection is just wonderful.
